Plants Here, Plants There, Plants Everywhere (Lockdown Edition)

Hi people!! How are you? Me, again

Well,  I spent last weekend with the Master on Neuroscience online classes. (Yeah, I DO get bored, too!)

But on Saturday morning we talked a lot about... FOOD and BRAIN. The nutritionist that was delivering the class talked a lot about DIETS so I remembered you!!!

We also discussed how a misunderstood study (or a totally prepared marketing campaign) made us believe (and use and teach) the benefits of the FOOD PYRAMID for a long time.

but...

So, which balanced meal plan should we use???

I'm also leaving here two great TED talks:

1) my favourite chef JAMIE OLIVER. Although it's a bit old, his concepts are absolutely correct!!

2) How healthy would we be if we could have a green urban farm?

As Jamie Oliver says, the problem with young people and vegetables/fuits is that they don't know where veggies come from and the enormous work it takes to keep them alive. So, we are going to grow our own plants!!
For  wednesday, October 21st , I would like to see all your CD germination (one per person) photos !!!
These are the instructions:

But I don't want everybody to use the same kind of seeds, so  people in

GROUP 1
Azar, Barbat, Birecwaig, Cedro, Dbsie Agustín, Molina Pico, Muruzabal, Raineri and Rodriguez Pelender will be using VEGETABLE SEEDS (the ones you have at home such as pumpkin, bellpepper, tomato) (no Beans, please!)

*  GROUP 2
Cremona, Fiorito, Dbsie Tomás, De Pedro, Fernández, Liao, Lopez Avetrani Joaquin and Magario  will be using FRUIT SEEDS (the ones you have at home such as lemon, apple, orange)

* GROUP 3
Gallo, Lopez Avetrani Santiago, García Canteli, Herrera, Iglesias Bruno, Illarramendi and Lauri will be using potatoes, onions, carrots, lettuce or sweet potatoes to obtain a plant. You will have to check your fridge to find a potato, an onion or a carrot that already has roots or sprouts.(like the ones in the picture) and then put it in a pot with soil.

I'd like you to send me pictures of your CD boxes every 15 days!!!

It will be a kind of HUNGER GAMES. Instead of districts, each of you will represent your plant group. The students who take care of their plants properly and whose plant makes it to November 30th will get a 10. The ones who don't...  The plant group with the most survivors will get an extra 10! #MayTheOddsBeEverInYourFavour

Let's become #UrbanFarmers!!

PS: This is an old picture of me with my grand uncle for you to see how much I have always loved plants (up to the point of trying to eat a tree hahaha)

Throwback Tuesday to when my students made super cool videos

Hi, my fellow "master procrastinators". As I have been receiving some super belated questions on how to make the videos you are supposed to hand in on Monday, I decided to include an example from a previous year and some comments.

1) As you have seen, the video is a cooking programme like the ones in the Gourmet Channel where you must answer the 10 questions from "The Scientific Chef" WHILE COOKING. Please, add subtitles because sometimes the sound is not very clear. This example video is too long. Make yours between 5 to 7 minutes long.

2) The video IS NOT about the menu, which has to be handed in in a computer file following all the guidances on any practical work (A4 paper, references, cover, badge etc). The menu has to include the dishes you designed and the explanation on why you included those ingredients. (please, write the names of the different courses correctly)

3) The chart can be done in a real chart and photographed or digitally. Don't use charts from internet because the group that cheats will get an #InstantOne

Please, be creative! Quarantine is already boring and dreadful... I gave you a long time in the hope that you would make something really cool to make my day.

See you on Thursday at 10!!!

And a  #Challenge:
1) Which is the only diet (as a way of eating, not of losing weight) that has scientific proved endorsement?
2) What kind of food does it include? Why?
3) Why is it that any diet highlighted in yellow is bad for us? Why shouldn't we leave meat out of our dish???

Please, put the video, the chart and the menu in a folder in your drive and send me the link. Remember, please, that my gmail account is about to explode!

It's (not) all about the diet

Hi, my beloved students!!! How are you doing? How is this quarantine treating you? How many kilos have you gained so far??? XD
Well, the title of my post is connected to a very famous song by Meghan Trainor. Do you know remember it? What is it about?

Yes!! Food, diets, stereotypes and all the concepts we have been discussing in class lately.

First of all, we discussed our distorted models. Sometimes, Photoshopping is not the best solution!!!

I'll post a million super interesting videos for us to discuss in upcoming classess!! ( Please, divide into 5 groups,  I would like to see a summary on these videos per group before Monday August 31st)

1) This is Sandra's Amodt's video.

2) This is a great video on the Psychology of food based on the article written by Diego Golombek

3) Now, Let's discover why we are hungry!

>

4) Do you want to lose weight (but scientifically)??

5) Can I be a celiac?

Lat class, we also discussed the two meanings of the word DIET

1.
the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.--> WESTERN/EASTERN DIETS

2.a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons

I would like to discuss with you some of the TRENDY DIETS people follow these days. For each diet, I would like to know:

*The notion behind it
*The restrictions they apply
*Creator of the diet
*Positive and negative points
*Calory consumption per day

Let's divide this into 8 groups

VEGAN DIET: Argañaraz, Rodriguez Perlender, Gallo
VEGETARIAN DIET: Raineri, Barbat, Muruzábal
DETOX DIET: Birencwajg, Molina Pico, Iglesias
KETO DIET: Magario, Cremona, Lopez Avetrani Santiago

DR RAVENNA'S DIET Dbsie Tomás, Liao, Lauri
PALEO DIET: Fernandez Juri, Illarramendi, Fiorito
